Running your diesel genset at light load for long periods? That's asking for trouble.
Here's what happens: when the engine never gets hot enough, unburned fuel and oil start building up inside. You get carbon deposits on the pistons, the piston rings stick, and the turbocharger gets clogged with soot. Over time, the engine starts burning oil, losing compression, and producing thick black smoke.
We've seen gensets rated at 500 kW that only run 50–100 kW for years. When they finally need full power, they can't deliver it. Sometimes the engine is already damaged beyond repair.
The fix is simple but often ignored: run a proper load bank test at 75–100% load for at least 30 minutes, regularly. It burns off the deposits and keeps the engine healthy.
At our factory, every marine genset goes through a full-load test before shipment. It's not just paperwork — we actually run it, measure it, and make sure it hits the rated output with clean exhaust.
If your backup genset has been sitting idle or running light for months, maybe it's time to schedule a load test. Better to find the problem now than when you actually need the power.
